What is Optical Internal Urethrotomy?
Optical Internal Urethrotomy is used to treat urethral strictures, a medical condition when the urethra (the tube that drains urine from the bladder) becomes narrow. In this surgical process, the body tissues in the urethra are removed, to release it.
How does it help?
The surgical process normalises the urine flow, after releasing the urethra. The patients do not experience any kind of difficulty in urinating, after this procedure. It is a minimally invasive treatment, and the stricture is normalised with a laser, and no incisions or cuts are made.
How is it done?
Steps to take before the surgery: Diagnostic tests will be conducted to confirm, and later determine the length and severity of the stricture. Initial tests include measurement of urine discharge, testing chemical properties of urine (for traces of bacteria or blood), Cystoscopy, and measurement of the urethra. X-ray tests or ultrasounds are done to clinically evaluate the stricture.
How does Dr. Anirudh Kaushik provide care?
In this case using a cystoscope the narrowed part of urethra ( stricture/scar tissue) is directly visualized and cut across using acold knife. No cut is involved in the skin. The procedure can be done as day care surgery. Usually a catheter is kept for 5-7 days post surgery for healing.
What happens during the procedure? : During this procedure, the doctor will insert a cystoscope (a thin optical device) into the urethra. Some surgical instruments are inserted through the cystoscope into the urethra to removes the stricture or vaporise it with a laser.
After the procedure : You will be instructed by our doctor Dr. Anirudh Kaushik on how to monitor for signs of infection and take proper care of the urinary drainage system. You may also be prescribed a few antibiotics, and might be asked to limit your physical activities.
What are the benefit and risks of this procedure?
The surgery has revolutionised the world of medical procedure, but as any other surgical process, it also has a few risks associated with it.
The advantages of the surgery are:
1: Faster recovery.
2: Minimal scarring.
3: Less risk of infection.
The risks associated with the surgery are:
1: The risk of infection in the urinary tract and at the site of the operation.
2: Wound dehiscence.
3: Recurrence of urethral stricture.
4: Excessive bleeding.
There is always a risk of recurrence, and therefore, a subsequent surgery is required. A patient may also require the support of self- catheterization. A catheter has to be fitted every time when a patient needs to urinate.
